Lost Expectancies (2017)
A Solo Exhibition
Art It Is Gallery, Woodstock
November 2017
Pregnancy loss is an example of cultural silence around reproductive malfunction: statistically common, it remains shrouded in secrecy.
Peel (2016:79).
This exhibition deals with loss, specifically the loss of an unborn child early in pregnancy, and the associated lost expectancies.
My artistic theme of concern is the silence experienced with miscarriages in Western society – a taboo grief I have suffered personally,
multiple times. The exhibition follows my personal journey from loss and grief to final acceptance, emotions experienced by a large percentage of women globally. Through an exploratory creative approach, I aim to break the silence and expose these suppressed emotions by converting them, visually, into a mythical funerary narrative for the lost.
