Exploring how perspective shapes our understanding of complex systems

"My work explores the hidden systems that organise the world around us.

Moving between scales — from ant colonies to urban construction to shifting cloud formations — I examine how perspective alters our understanding of complex structures.

Through drawing, printmaking and material experimentation, these systems become metaphors for human attempts to comprehend and navigate an ever-changing environment."

Elske Henderson is a conceptual visual artist based in Cape Town, South Africa, working across painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media. Her work traces hidden systems across shifting scales — from ant colonies to urban construction to cloud formations.

Ants map the logic of human socialisation; construction cranes emerge as urban birds, assembling the city in slow, mechanical flight. Across these movements between ground and sky, her work explores how we construct meaning within complex and changing environments.

Originally trained in pharmacy and later completing an MBA at the University of Cape Town, Henderson returned to formal art studies and obtained a BVA (cum laude) from UNISA in 2020. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and art events across South Africa. She currently serves as Chairperson of the AVA Gallery.
