Future Deconstruction (2018)
A Solo Exhibition
Art It Is Gallery, Woodstock
November 2018
My work explores the future of cities, 150 years from now. I look at the anticipated urbanisation in 2168, four generations from now, when the impact of our present conduct will manifest in others’ futures. By using existing modern building material and structures, I probe potential future construction, destruction, reconstruction and deconstruction. But my future mega cities are not limited to planet Earth. I explore the possibility of urban expansion to other planets, such as Mars.
My exhibition, FUTURE DE[con]STRUCTION, comprises four sculptures, each representing a possible future megacity - in various stages of development and decay. These are supported by wall art representing my concept development.
Why did I chose the year 2168? The choice was based on my own age. According to the scientist Niles-Yokum (2015:7), the probability of humans living to 100 years of age is increasing. The anti- aging researcher, Dr Aubrey de Grey', defiantly suggests that humans can live even longer, and that the human who will live to be 200 years old has already been born (Lekabe 2018). I purposely chose the year 2168 (the year in which I will turn 200 years old), to imagine where and how I would live, should that human turn out to be me.
